Wow ~ I can't believe how long it's been since I've attended class! Been so busy with holidays and the 2010 Healing Artists of the Sacramento Region directory production that I suppose I just didn't make my yoga practice a priority. I noticed in my e-newsletter that Beth of River Song Meditation was offering a new Yin style yoga, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to get back to my practice. In Candlelight Yin Yoga, one uses cushy blankets (provided in class) instead of a sticky mat. Asanas (poses) are held for several minutes, so that you can really "sink in". Some poses were physically challenging and some were seemingly "easy", yet you can really feel where you are still holding on, and can therefore "let go" while in the pose for so long. Class ended with an extended relaxation pose and a nice relaxed, blissful feeling to end my day with :) Beth teaches Candlelight Yin Yoga every Friday night from 6-7:15pm at Sacramento Yoga Center in Curtis Park. I went to go see this movie in San Francisco and even got to meet the film maker (this movie is now available on DVD)! It was an intersting documentary in which a person, whom had not yet been practicing yoga, was selected to go on a journey of exploring different styles of yoga and practicing regularly to see how it changed or influenced his life. I would have loved to see more than one person followed on this journey, since all people are different, and various styles may affect people differently. Another great addition for a future documentary would be to follow someone on a journey practicing one style of yoga for an extended period of time (instead of taking just one class in a particular style and then hopping around to different styles for months and using this method to gage the benefits/effects of yoga. All in all, it was really exciting to see a modern documentary on the practice of yoga ~ Many well-known yogi's and yoga practitioners (like Rodney Yee and B.K.S. Iyengar) were filmed! I visited the Crystal Hermitage during their open house recently.
Over a week and a half more than 1,100 people came to see The Crystal Hermitage gardens where 7000 tulips are blooming. The
Crystal Hermitage is a lovely and calming holy place. The Gardens are beautifully designed and maintained, and overlook the hills of the Sierra Nevadas, the canyon of the Middle Fork of the Yuba River, and the Tahoe National Forest.
This wonderfully flavorful Indian drink can be made from scratch from the recipe below. It has been used for all-around good health.
5 Quarts Filtered Water
1 Tablespoon Peppercorns
3 Tablespoons cardamon pods, opened
1/2 Tablespoon cloves
5 cinnamon sticks
1 medium chopped ginger root
1 black tea bag
honey or sweetener to taste
Milk if desired
Bring water to a boil and add the ingredients. Reduce heat to simmer for 45 minutes. Take off heat and add black tea bag. Allow to steep for 2 minutes (no more). Strain, then add 2.5 quarts of water and bring to a boil again. Take off heat, cool then store in fridge. Serve with honey and milk to taste, heating as needed.
